Also known as red tea, rooibos is grown and harvested exclusively in South Africa and is an increasingly popular herbal drink, altogether different from the camelia sinensis (tea) plant. Rooibos is naturally caffeine free so it is an ideal drink for anytime of day and for drinkers of all ages. Popularity among health-conscious people is due to high levels of antioxidants and polyphenols present in rooibos, as well as reports of relief from nervous tension, allergies and digestive problems. Rooibos is also easily adaptable to other flavors and preparation methods. Due to the low tannin levels, the reddish-brown brew is very smooth and can be consumed in large amounts. The flavor can be described as earthy, sweet, and mild.
